Clare Morgan longlisted for Edge Hill Short Story Prize
Author Clare Morgan has been longlisted for the Edge Hill Short Story Prize for her most recent collection, Scar Tissue.
The prize recognises excellence in a published, single-authored short story collection.
Billy Cowan, Edge Hill Short Story Prize organiser, said: “The short story is often an under-appreciated form of fiction and we’re proud to continue supporting it through the Edge Hill Short Story Prize”.
Clare Morgan is Director of Oxford University’s creative writing programme and a fellow of Kellogg College, Oxford. Scar Tissue is a follow up to her first short story collection An Affair of the Heart.

Hannah Hodgson wins Wordsworth Prize for Literature & Poetry at Lakeland Book of the Year Awards 2023
Congratulations to Hannah Hodgson who has won the Wordsworth Prize for Literature and Poetry for her collection 163 Days at Lakeland Book of the Year 2023.
The Wordsworth Prize for Literature and Poetry is one of seven awards which make up the prizes, as well as overall Lakeland Book of the Year. You can read about the other category winners on the Lakeland Book of the Year website.
Head judge Fiona Armstrong said of this year “This is one of the strongest literary fields we have had. It has been so hard to decide who wins and who is shortlisted. We have worked our way through a treasure trove of beautifully crafted and presented books. Which just shows how much talent there is here in Cumbria, and how much interest there is further afield in writing about the county.”
The Lakeland Book of the Year Awards 2023 was organised by Cumbria Tourism, the official Destination Management Organisation LVEP? (DMO) for the Lake District, Cumbria.
As well as journalist and head judge Fiona Armstrong, the judging panel included the Director of Wordsworth Grasmere Michael McGregor, author Kathleen Jones, and renowned broadcaster and former Cumbria Tourism president Eric Robson.

This week’s Friday Poem is ‘Night Mode’ by Tamar Yoseloff from her collection The Black Place. Tamar has recently been awarded a Cholmondeley Award from the Society of Authors in recognition of her contribution to poetry .

Tamar Yoseloff Awarded Cholmondeley Award
Tamar Yoseloff is one of six poets awarded a prestigious Cholmondeley Award by the Society of Authors. The Cholmondeley Awards recognise the achievement and distinction of individual poets and are awarded for a body of work by a poet and their contribution to poetry. This year’s awards were judged by Moniza Alvi, Hannah Lowe, Drew Milne and Deryn Rees-Jones.
Following the announcement, judge Moniza Alvi said: “The Cholmondeley Awards have been, since they were introduced in 1966, important honorary awards that recognise poets’ sustained excellence across a body of work. Some of the recipients will already be well-known in the poetry world, while others may be deserving of wider recognition for the distinction of their writing. Many of them will have contributed to the genre in a variety of ways, through their performances and tutoring, for example. The Cholmondeley Awards prove that excellence can be perceived across a wide range of poetry from a diversity of poets. It is hoped that the recipients will feel valued, encouraged and truly celebrated.”
Tamar Yoseloff’s seventh collection, Belief Systems, is due from Nine Arches Press in Summer 2024. She’s also the author of Formerly (with photographs by Vici MacDonald), shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award, and collaborative editions with artists Linda Karshan and Charlotte Harker respectively. She has taught as a lecturer on the Poetry School / Newcastle University MA in Writing Poetry and for various museums and galleries, including the Royal Academy and the Hayward.
Seren published her New and Selected Poems A Formula for Night in 2015 and her collection The Black Place in 2019.
An Update from Seren – Interim Management
As you may be aware, Seren Publisher Mick Felton retired on Friday 30th June. As we are still looking to fill the position of Seren CEO, we’re posting this update to let you know what is going to happen during the next 4-6 months.
From the 1st July, our Deputy Publisher Sarah Johnson will be covering Mick’s role, with the full support of Seren staff, taking responsibility for the business and ensuring that Seren continues to run smoothly. Very little will change in terms of the day to day running of the business with minimal disruption to the way we work, and the Board of Directors will be actively working to support and advise staff throughout the coming months.
Sales Manager Simon Hicks will continue to work closely with our sales representatives across the UK, the editorial team will be supporting authors whose books are nearing publication and Sarah will continue to oversee Seren’s marketing activities with additional support from our Admin and Marketing Assistant Natalia Elliot, who will be working an additional day each week in the next few months.
As ever, Seren is committed to its authors and will remain in regular contact during this time. We will still be discussing submissions for future titles and will be in touch with anyone already having such conversations with Mick in the coming weeks.
This is an exciting time for Seren and as ever, we are grateful for the support of our authors, colleagues and customers as we look towards the future. We appreciate your patience as we settle into this new phase and anyone with concerns is welcome to contact us.

Kathryn Bevis shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem
Seren poet Kathryn Bevis has been shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem 2023 for her poem ‘My Body Tells Me She’s Filling for Divorce’. The poem was originally published in our sister magazine Poetry Wales before going on to win the Second Light Poetry Competition 2022. It was also published in Kathryn’s debut pamphlet Flamingo.
This year’s Best Single Poem categories, which include both written and performed poems, were judged by Joelle Taylor, Khadijah Ibrahiim, Caroline Bird, Chris Redmond and Sue Roberts. Of the shortlists, panel chair Joelle Taylor said: ‘Between the two categories we have curated shortlists that exemplify all that is distinct, innovative, and alive in British poetry and poetic thought.’
The winners of this year’s Forward Prizes will be announced in an award ceremony later this year. The shortlists for all categories including Best Collection and Best First Collection can be viewed on the Forward Prizes website.
