Friday Poem – ‘One-sided Conversation with a Hydrozoan’ by Katrina Naomi

Photo of a Portuguese Man of War floating on a blue ocean.

This week’s Friday Poem is ‘One-Sided Conversation with a Hydrozoan’ by Katrina Naomi from her collection Battery Rocks which recently won the Holyer an Gof Award for Poetry.

One-Sided Conversation with a Hydrozoan
Pink mini monster, exaggerated bubble
of gum
blown from the Indian Ocean
against October drifts of black-green weed
your gassy bag of sail crimped like a pasty
You’ve swum a colossal distance
to lie on a Sunday beach
Portuguese, at least by name, war-like
They say you’re no jellyfish. I offer a guarded welcome
It’s your tropical tentacles –
the blue of Curaçao cocktails –
that do the damage, stunning
fish, wiping welts along swimmers’ bodies
Your lacy, lengthy, bike chains
your party poppers of venom
mingle with themselves, stinging bladder wrack to oblivion
You’ve a freedom a person can admire, your own food
and transport, your ease in reproduction
a kitschy colour scheme
to die for, or at least sense keenly. Let’s say you leave your mark
I respect your beauty, your gaiety
But
dear
silent
killer
why this display, why all the flashy warning? You’re a sun king
a samurai in his finery, an Uma Thurman on Marazion sands
I’m unsure how many choices a hydrozoan gets to make
I could choose to end your life. Instinct says
bury you – you may do me harm
But I want you
gorgeously alive
