Friday Poem – ‘For the Origin’ by Rupinder Kaur Waraich

This week’s Friday Poem is ‘For the Origin’ by Rupinder Kaur Waraich from her new collection Tigress with Wings.

For the Origin
i.
when the tigress begins to fly
the bulbul will wear a blue kameez
sit on the rooftop of Noor Mahaal
watching a hundred women
all with the same orange, mustard kameez
purple salwars but no shoes
they will disappear into the clouds
while two lovers remain on the grass
ii.
it is past midnight
hands reach for the chest
hands and feet with red alta
in the back of the street
where no one can see and sitars can sneak in
with the musk of jasmine traipsing
six pleats unravelling language lost
iii.
in the dreams of horses
there is a field of sunflowers
a baraat of women walking
not going for a wedding
but to their own funeral
before being placed in coffins
they will become alive
and bulbuls will fly to see
where I left mum up the hill
away from peacocks to see eagles
she didn’t call for my name
then she appeared mounted
on the back of a tiger.
