Friday Poem – ‘II. Night Vision’ by Laura Wainwright

This week’s Friday Poem is ‘II. Night Vision’ by Laura Wainwright from her debut collection The Storm’s Flora.

II. Night Vision
Trying to settle,
I’m dust disturbed,
sleet
on a salted road.
When he wakes, I stroke his hair,
say in my calmest
maternal voice: close your eyes,
breathe,
picture a peaceful scene.
Tonight, I take my own advice,
visualise a simple stone house
against a slope of heather,
a track down to a copse of rose-gold beech,
a rattling, bell-clear stream.
Inside, there’s an unguarded fire,
a deep and drowsy chair
where I sit. Through a window,
I watch a bleary day-moon
make an icon of my words: there,
you see?
The world stays just the same when it gets dark.
