Jonathan Edwards, Josephine Lay & Open Mic | The Sober Parrot
Acclaimed poet Jonathan Edwards is author of the best-selling, Costa-Prize-winning My Family and Other Superheroes. His collection was described as 'Joyful and dynamic – a collection that’ll make you laugh and make you think' by Costa Poetry Book Award Judges. His book Gen, which covers lions and rock stars, street parties and servants, postmen and voices, was called 'bold and sweeping’ by Ben Ray and 'a triumph' by The Yorkshire Times. Jonathan has been nominated for a 2019 Forward Prize for Best Single poem – the results are due for publication on 20 October.
In the open mic, each poet will be allocated a 2-minute slot to read, which might be 3 short poems, or one long one. Priority in the open mic will be given to participants in the workshop led by Jonathan earlier in the day, or to poets who have booked in advance for this reading event. Whether those who arrive without a ticket can read in the open mic will depend on advance bookings
Reading with Jonathan is Josephine Lay, a superb poet and writer living between Cheltenham and Gloucester. Josephine is currently ‘Poet in Residence’ at Cheltenham Library. She’s the Creative Writing Advisor for Blackeyes Publishing UK, and she has recently released her second collection of poems entitled ‘Unravelling’ published by ‘Black Eyes.’ Josephine is a member of the Gloucestershire Poetry Society (GPS) and the Cheltenham Poetry Society, and she hosts ‘Squawkers’; a monthly poetry night at the Sober Parrot Café in Cheltenham. Josephine is a firm believer that page poetry and performance poetry both play an important part in today's poetry scene. She runs poetry workshops and performs her work in various venues around Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and surrounding counties.
Please note that the meeting room is upstairs on the first floor, and there is no lift.
