Join Cath Drake for an online, monthly poetry reading and writing group taking place over four sessions. In the first hour of these workshops we will tackle a theme each month with an inspiring batch of poems sent in advance. We'll look in depth at the poems, poets and poetic technique with expert guidance. Then then after a 15mins break we'll write together and share our writing. Author and freelance journalist Daniel Butler discusses his book The Owl House (Seren 2020), which explores the rich wildlife surrounding his home near Rhayader. Daniel has lived in the Cambrian Mountains near Rhayader for the past twenty-five years, specialising in rural and environmental issues. Daniel’s passion for keeping hawks was compounded by two wild birds, barn owls which nested at his farm and became increasingly tame and familiar with him and his family. In this online workshop with Elizabeth Parker, you will explore exciting poems and experiment with structure, form and language in your writing as you create new work. In this session you will investigate the effects of refrains, exploring examples of villanelle and creating poems that make use of the repeated line. Some students may wish to attempt a villanelle. In this course, we will encourage you to expand your repertoire of styles and approaches, experiment with the longer poem or sequence and enhance your writing and editing skills. We will explore what governs choices as to style, diction and form in both metrical and free verse, and how to challenge those choices while staying true to your own aesthetic sensibilities.
