Maggie Harris will be the guest reader at the Creative Writing and Reading Series. Maggie's short story collection, Writing on Water, was published by Seren in 2017. Her stories are informed by the Caribbean, where she was born, and Britain where she has lived as an adult, and through them, the wider world. Issues of belonging and migration feature, but alongside these are growing interests in voice, narrative, gardening and botany, music and family. In this evening talk, David Hurn and Martin Parr will be discussing their shared passion for collecting photography, and how their collections are being used to support and promote the preservation, research and appreciation of photography in the UK. David Hurn has a longstanding international reputation as one of Britain’s most influential documentary photographers. We return after the festive break for February’s First Thursday event. Guest speaker Bryony Littlefair will read from her Mslexia Prize-winning pamphlet, Giraffe, and Bethany W. Pope (author of Masque, a re-telling of Gaston Le Roux’s classic, The Phantom of the Opera) will read new poetry published by Mulfran Press. After the readings we will have a short break and then the famous Open Mic. All are invited to read up to one poem or a page of prose. This exhibition celebrates the major gift of photographs from David Hurn’s private collection and marks the opening of Amgueddfa Cymru’s first gallery dedicated to photography. Throughout his career as a documentary photographer and member of Magnum Photos, Hurn has been an avid collector of photography. Remarkably, he has amassed his private collection by swapping works with other photographers.
