Virtual First Thursday June | Katherine Stansfield & Christina Thatcher

This month we welcome Katherine Stansfield and Christina Thatcher to Virtual First Thursday to read from their new poetry collections, both of which have launched during lockdown. The evening will follow our usual format of two readings followed by an open mic.

In her second collection, We Could Be Anywhere by Now, Katherine Stansfield brings us poems about placement and displacement full of both wry comedy and uneasy tension. Stints in Wales, Italy and Canada, plus return trips to her native Cornwall all spark poems delighting in the off-key, the overheard, the comedy and pathos of everyday life.

How to Carry Fire (Parthian) was born from the ashes of family addiction. Beginning with the burning down of her childhood home, Thatcher explores how fire can both destroy and cleanse.  Underneath and among the flames runs the American and Welsh landscapes – locations which, like fire itself, offer up experiences which mesmerise, burn and purify.  This poignant second collection reminds us of how the most dangerous and volatile fires can forge us – even long after the flames have died down.

Please email sarahjohnson@serenbooks.com for the meeting details. You can also let her know if you would like to sign up for the open mic in advance.
