Paul Henry & Brian Briggs | Poetry and Songwriting, Residential Course
This five day residential course is hosted by award-winning Welsh poet Paul Henry and singer-songwriter Brian Briggs – former frontman of indie-folk band Stornoway. Their collaboration, The Glass Aisle (Seren 2018), is a mesmerising collaboration of songs and poetry. On this course we’ll explore the borders between poems and song lyrics. Through group workshops and one-to-one tutorials, we’ll look at what poetry and songwriting can learn from each other, considering the influences of melody and rhythm. Turning poems into song lyrics and vice versa, we’ll explore how words behave differently on the page and when sung. Aimed at poets, songwriters and musicians, you’ll have an opportunity to collaborate with individuals interested in a variety of styles, genres and forms.
Whether you’re a poet seeking to refine the lyricism of your voice, or a songwriter keen to extend the range of your lyrics, here is an opportunity to break new ground and try out new approaches within a friendly, supportive atmosphere. And if you happen to play an instrument which fits in your case, car, coach or carriage, bring it along!
